As a US Army veteran it means that you are a part of a group of people who will forever be linked in some shape, form, or fashion. As a member of the service I played basketball at my various duty stations, and played for the post teams at Ft. Ord, Ca., Augsburg Germany, Camp Humpherys, korea, Ft Devens Ma, and Kaiserslautren Germany. My story is about how my playing ball helped my mom. My mom had went to see my sister graduate from basic at Parris Island, her flight landed in the middle of the night after a unexpected layover. While getting her luggage , not sure of what to do, and no transportation to the base at that hour, as my mom related the story, she was at a lost as to what to do.
As she sat in the terminal, a soldier approached her and said " Mam, I overheard that stewardess call you Mrs Damon, is your son Norman Damon?, my mom answered yes. The soldier went on to express how he had seen me play many times. He then offered to take my mom to the base, mom said that even if she got there she did't know what to do until morning. The true brotherhood that is the military had this soldier then offer my mom his guestroom. Mom said thank you, but no thanks it was about then that the soldiers wife showed up to pick him up. The soldiers wife, who was also a member of the military expressed that she to had seen me play, and there was no way she was gonna let the mother of a fellow soldier spend the night in a empty airport. Mom said she felt in her heart that the couple was sincere and she went with them. She was treated to a warm bed, a hearty breakfast in the morning , and a ride to the base. Over the years I have wondered who these two people were, what I do know about them is that they are a part of The True Brotherhood
